Putting people in control of their care
Leslie Smith has seen huge changes for the better in her son, Christopher, since he was given a personal budget. Aged 20, Christopher has ADHD, epilepsy, an undiagnosed genetic condition and is also on the autistic spectrum. The family became concerned about Christopher’s long term prospects when the time came for him to leave school a year ago.
Leslie says: "Christopher’s adult life is now fantastic – he is at college and really enjoying it. He has a great time, and I now know that when we’re not here he will be OK."
Councillor Steve Ayris, Sheffield City Council Cabinet Member for Independent and Healthy Living, says: "We want to make sure that everyone receiving adult social care has as much control over their life as possible. People are already using their personal budgets to arrange very individual and innovative types of support that work for them. We hope that many more people will take advantage of the flexibility offered by this system."
